Homeless people taken off the streets as part of the Operation Search - For homeless people and street kids
In an effort to slowing down the spread of COVID-19, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a 21-day national lockdown which began at midnight on Thursday, 26 March 2020 to Thursday, 16 April 2020.
The lockdown excluded those people and organization offering essential services to various communities. The department embarked on an operation to search, trace and place homeless people and street kids across Mpumalanga province with the aim of ensuring their maximum social protection and that they are provided with necessary support during the Covid-19 Lockdown. Various centers were identified in various towns of the province to cater for homeless adults, children and victims of violence. Over 120 homeless people across the province were placed in identified shelters for the period of the Lockdown. They were also provided with food and dignity packs.
